When Should I Replace My Washing Machine Hose?

After you install your home’s washing machine, you may not give it a second thought. Assuming the machine seems to be working okay, and your clothes are all coming out fine, there’s nothing to worry about, right?

Unfortunately, this is not actually the case. What too many homeowners don’t know is that it’s important to replace their washing machine hose periodically with a new one.

When your machine was first installed, chances are it came with a rubber supply hose, connecting the unit to the hot and cold water faucets on the wall behind it. The more you use your washing machine, the more the strain of the water pressure is going to wear the hose down. Eventually, the hose may become so brittle that it breaks, resulting in extensive damage to your laundry room and the rest of your home. It’s been estimated that a ruptured washing machine can pump your house with as much as 500 gallons of water per hour, so this problem is not to be underestimated.

You should replace your rubber washing machine hose every 3-5 years to avoid this problem, however, a better option may be to upgrade your washing machine with a stainless steel hose. Stainless steal lines are more durable and long-lasting than traditional rubber hoses, and are not known for breaking and causing major flooding. You can upgrade your washing machine with a braided stainless steel hose as soon as it is installed, or you can switch out your rubber hose for one at the 3-5 year mark. And remember, at even the first sign of a small leak, you should turn off your water supply line and replace your washing machine hose right away.
